Bucket hat, hat for spring/summer 2024.
Crocheted Hat: Smelling of Summer and Freedom. Colorful, simple, and quick to make.
An accessory making a comeback for the 2024 summer season, it's an accessory that never really went out of style, both in winter and in summer, it's the most chosen accessory by youngsters for their looks, both day and night, and even celebrities seem to highly appreciate this detail.
I'm talking about the bucket hat, also known in Italy as ''fisherman's hat'', with a somewhat bucket-shaped form.
Whether you prefer cool fabrics or comfortable yarns, the important thing is to make them of all kinds. I've gone ahead and opted for a fresh, colorful, and bright accessory, but before we move on to the instructions, let's have some more information about fisherman's hats or bucket hats.
Suitable for a beach aperitif, city traffic, a picnic in the countryside, well, you name it…. This hat looks good on everything, although it's the younger ones who seem to have the most fun wearing it.
There are various offerings from big brands like PHILOSOPHY that have made them in raffia, there's FENDI which launched them at the fashionable price of €790, MISSONI offers various summer shades for only €350, GUCCI sticks to minimal but always up-to-date with the maison launching them at €320, and then there's MIU MIU. Surely, there's plenty to choose from.
Choose your colors, your preferred crochet hooks, and unleash your imagination.
Are you inexperienced? What's the problem… this is a great opportunity to try your hand at a technique that has already been refreshed.
What are the yarns to use to make a ''fisherman's hat'' crochet for s/s 2024?
To make a lightweight fisherman's hat suitable for summer, it is advisable to use light and breathable yarns that offer comfort during hot days.
Here are some ideal yarns:
1. Cotton: Cotton is a classic choice for summer. It's light, breathable, and comfortable on the skin, making it perfect for summer hats.
2. Linen: Linen is another lightweight and breathable natural fiber, ideal for the warm months. It has a slightly rustic texture that adds a touch of freshness and casualness to the hat.
3. Bamboo: Bamboo yarns are known for their softness and moisture-absorbing ability, making them great for summer hats. They are lightweight, cool, and eco-friendly.
4. Silk: Although it might seem like a more luxurious yarn, silk can be used in lightweight blends to create elegant and comfortable hats. It adds a touch of shine to the garment.
5. Viscose: Viscose is a lightweight and cool synthetic yarn, ideal for summer hats. It has a silk-like sheen and is soft to the touch.
By choosing one of these yarns, or a combination of them, you can create a perfect fisherman's hat to tackle hot days with style and comfort.
How much yarn is needed to make a hat?
The amount of yarn needed to make a fisherman's hat depends on several factors, including the type of yarn used, the hat pattern, and the desired project size. However, I can give you an approximate estimate based on a standard pattern.
Typically, for a lightweight fisherman's hat for summer, you might need about 50-100 grams of yarn, depending on the hat size and the tension of your knitting or crocheting work.
If you're working with a medium or chunky weight yarn, you might need less yarn compared to a thinner yarn. Additionally, if the pattern includes specific decorations or additional details, you might need a bit more yarn.
I recommend consulting the specific pattern you're using to get a more accurate idea of the required yarn amount, as patterns often provide detailed instructions on the quantity and type of yarn to use.
What are the most commonly used crochet stitches for making a bucket hat?
To handcraft a crochet fisherman's hat, there are several stitches you can use. Here are some of the most common ones:
1. Single crochet (sc): The single crochet is one of the basic crochet stitches and is often used for constructing hats. It is a solid and compact stitch that provides a stable structure to the hat.
2. Double crochet (dc): The double crochet is another basic crochet stitch that can be used to create hats with a more open and lightweight texture. It's ideal for summer hats because it allows the head to breathe.
3. Seed stitch: This stitch combines single crochet and double crochet to create an interesting and textured pattern. It's particularly suitable for hats because it provides warmth and structure.
4. Shell stitch: This stitch is perfect for creating decorative edges or details on the bucket hat. It's a very simple stitch but adds a touch of elegance to the design.
5. Scallop stitch: The scallop stitch is a decorative stitch that can be used to add a touch of femininity and intricate beauty to the hat. It's great for edges or creating decorative motifs.
These are just some of the most common stitches used to handcraft a crochet fisherman's hat. You can combine these stitches in creative ways to create your own unique and personalized design.
How to Make a Crochet Bucket Hat?
Materials Needed:
I used some leftover yarns:
- Drake lilac
- Drake purple
- Grace lilac
You can also use a solid color Drake and a lurex Drake.
All worked with a 3.5mm crochet hook.
Process:
I started with a magic circle, I chained 3 and then worked 11 double crochets, at the end of the round I closed with a slip stitch in the first double crochet formed by the 3 chains.
1st round: I chained 3 again, working 1 increase in each double crochet, resulting in 24 stitches, closed with 1 slip stitch.
2nd round: I chained 3, alternating 1 increase and 1 double crochet, closed with 1 slip stitch.
3rd round: I chained 3, alternating 1 increase and 2 double crochets, closed with 1 slip stitch.
4th round: I chained 3, alternating 1 increase and 3 double crochets, closed with 1 slip stitch.
5th round: I chained 3, alternating 1 increase and 9 double crochets, closed with 1 slip stitch.
6th round: I chained 3, worked 1 double crochet in each stitch, closed with 1 slip stitch.
7th round: I repeated the same round, of 1 double crochet in each stitch until the 13th round, closed with 1 slip stitch.
14th round: I chained 3, alternating 1 increase and 2 double crochets, closed with 1 slip stitch.
15th round: I chained 3, alternating 1 increase and 3 double crochets, closed with 1 slip stitch.
16th round: I chained 3, alternating 1 increase and 4 double crochets, closed with 1 slip stitch.
17th/18th round: I chained 3, worked 1 double crochet in each stitch, closed with 1 slip stitch.
19th round: I changed color starting from a slip stitch, chained 2 and made 1 single crochet in each stitch, closed with 1 slip stitch.
