Teddy Bag: the chenille bag to make with crochet.
In the era of handmade, where an accessory is not just a whim but a manifesto of creativity and style, the Teddy Bag is the latest trend in the world of handmade bags. A versatile and incredibly soft bag, designed for those who love to stand out with elegance and functionality, perfect for the office, university, or a stroll among the city's shops.
REQUIRED MATERIALS
What you will need: 4 skeins of Avril beige chenille for that soft and refined touch, 3 skeins of Bravissimo 50g beige for a delicate yet sturdy structure, 6.5 crochet hook, yarn needle for finishing, and scissors.
Making the Teddy Bag: Softness and Style in Every Stitch
Before starting, it’s essential to decide: do you want a soft, cuddly accessory to show off with ease, or are you looking for a spacious and versatile tote-bag, perfect for work and daily life? In the latter case, using an internal shell will make your Teddy Bag even more functional and structured.
Panels to make:
- 1 panel 25x60cm
- 1 rectangle 15x80cm
- 1 square 20x20cm
- 2 straps 6x95cm, then I sewed everything together.
Main Panel
Start a chain with the Avril beige chenille yarn worked with Bravissimo50 Beige to create a rectangular panel that will determine the width and height of your bag. Work in single crochet across the surface for a compact and soft texture. This panel will be the base and the front and back sides of the bag.
I worked 24 chains, then went back in single crochet, in the last stitch I made one chain, turned the work, and continued in single crochet to create a rectangular panel of the size I thought was right for my bag.
Side Panel
Continue with a narrower panel for the sides, using single crochet as well.
I worked 15 chains, went back in single crochet, added one chain, turned the work, and so on. We need to achieve a panel of 15x80cm.
This panel will give depth to the bag, allowing you to organize accessories and small items without sacrificing softness. Again, work the AVRIL CHENILLE with BRAVISSIMO50 for the perfect combination of structure and delicacy.
Front Pocket
Now let’s create a square pocket.
Work 20 chains and use the same stitching technique until you achieve a square that measures 20x20cm.
Start a small square panel in single crochet, and attach it to the front of the bag. A practical pocket for storing keys, phone, or small items to keep close at hand.
Handles
For the handles, create two strips in single crochet to form sturdy straps that will complete your bag. The length can vary depending on how you prefer to carry the Teddy Bag: over the shoulder or by hand.
I worked 6 chains and went back with one single crochet; in the last stitch, I added one chain, turned the work, and continued in single crochet until I completed both straps. The strap dimensions are 6x95cm.
Assembly
Now that all the panels are ready, proceed with the assembly. Join the panels by sewing the sides to give the bag a squared shape; I used the yarn needle and Bravissimo, ensuring the seams are strong yet discreet. Finally, attach the handles to the top of the bag.
Et voilà! Your Teddy Bag is ready to accompany you at any time of the day, always with that soft and sophisticated touch.
