The inlay work is not as scary as it may seem!
These hearts perfectly demonstrate the inlay method and are not too big a project to master. They really look lovely on a pillow to give to someone who has just moved house. Try different color schemes, if you make them in red they are also a wonderful gift for Valentine's Day.

Color combinations
The front of the pillow is made up of a total of 9 squares.
Always use MC as the color for the background. Make three squares with the heart motif in A, three in B, and three in C.
Processing.
To make the heart squares (make a total of 9 squares)
Foundation chain:
with MC, make 24 ch.
1st row (RS): 1 sc in the 2nd ch from the hook, 1 sc in each ch to the end. 23 sc.
2nd row: 1 ch (does not count as st), 1 sc in each sc to the end. 23 sc.
From the 3rd to the 6th row: repeat the 2nd row.
Continue in sc throughout, following the diagram for rows from the 7th to the 18th to work the heart motif and using a small ball of MC on each side of the motif.
Using only MC, work another 7 rows in sc.
Fasten off.
To make the striped back of the pillow cover
Foundation chain: with MC, make 70 ch.
1st row: 1 sc in the 2nd ch from the hook, 1 sc in each st to the end. 69 sc.
2nd row: 1 ch (does not count as st), 1 sc in each sc to the end. 69 sc.
Repeat the 2nd row for another 4 rows.
Cut MC, but do not fasten off.
Continue in sc, working another 67 rows in a random stripe sequence with colors MC, A, B, and C for a total of 73 rows. Alternatively, work the remaining 67 rows of stripes in the following sequence:
6 rows A, 6 rows B, 5 rows C, 4 rows MC, 6 rows A, 5 rows C, 5 rows MC, 6 rows B, 5 rows C, 4 rows MC, 5 rows A, 6 rows B, 4 rows MC.
Fasten off.
To join the heart squares
With a sewing needle, secure all yarn ends on the back panel and the heart squares. Then join the squares using MC (gray) and a single crochet seam by placing squares wrong sides together, so the seams are visible on the right side of the pillow. First join the three heart squares in A (green), then the three in B (red), and the three in C (yellow), to form the three horizontal rows.
Then join them to obtain a front panel of nine squares, with hearts A on top, B in the middle, and C at the bottom.
To finish the pillow cover
Work a single crochet seam around the front and back of the cover as follows:
Wrong sides together, pin the front and back panels together, leaving the top edge open.
Join MC with a sl st in the top left corner, inserting the hook through both the front and back pieces, 1 ch, 3 sc in the corner st, 23 sc evenly along the side of each of the three squares (skipping the seam junctions), 3 sc in the corner st, 23 sc along the bottom of each of the three squares (skipping the seam junctions). Do not fasten off.
Insert the padding, then work 23 sc along the top of each of the three squares (skipping the seam junctions), join with a sl st to the top of the first sc of the round.
Fasten off.
In conclusion, creating a crochet pillow with the intarsia technique for Valentine's Day is not just a way to express your talent in the art of crochet, but also represents a deep and personal gesture of love. Every stitch, every color, and every pattern that we have chosen and made together in this tutorial are not just parts of a simple pillow, but fragments of a handwoven love message, meant to last over time.
This project, in addition to offering the satisfaction of creating something beautiful with your own hands, allows you to explore and refine the intarsia technique, thus enriching your repertoire of crochet skills. The pillow you have made, with its intricate details and colors evoking love and passion, will surely become a unique and precious gift, carrying the warmth and affection of its creator.
This Valentine's Day, choosing to dedicate time and attention to creating a handmade gift means celebrating love in a deeply personal and meaningful form. The crochet pillow you have made is not just a decorative item, but a true symbol of the love that binds the giver to the receiver, a tangible reminder of shared moments and deep feelings.
I encourage you to continue exploring the vast world of crochet and intarsia techniques, letting yourself be inspired by the beauty of handcraft and the joy of creating gifts that come straight from the heart. May your crochet pillow for Valentine's Day be the first of many projects that bring love and beauty into your homes and into the lives of the people you love.
Happy Valentine's Day and happy crafting to all!
