Handmade gift ideas for newborns: Create a Baby Basket with a free crochet PDF.
Cotton candy, vanilla, mint…
No, it’s not the recipe for a summer smoothie, but the scent that fills a home welcoming a new life. There's a new, soft, and bright atmosphere when a baby girl arrives in this strange yet wonderful world.
To celebrate this special moment, I decided to create a welcome baby basket, a small nest hand-woven with crochet and lots of love. A handmade basket, designed to welcome the newborn and accompany her first days of life with sweetness and practicality.
What to put in the "BIRTH basket"?
Inside, I chose to include some useful little treats for the parents:
- A muslin bib,
- A mini gentle moisturizing cream,
- An organic cotton bodysuit,
- A naturally designed pacifier,
- A wooden and silicone rattle,
- And a handwritten note, because every word matters when a new story begins.
But let’s talk about the basket: the silent protagonist of this gift.
I made it using a yarn I love, the Olly cord. It’s the perfect ally for those who love DIY and home decor, thanks to its cotton-blend composition and matte, natural look. Its compact structure and 5 mm diameter make it ideal for creating objects that are both sturdy and soft. In this case, I chose a delicate tone – perfect for a little girl – and worked with crochet and patience, round after round, to shape a solid, elegant, and welcoming basket.
The great thing about Olly cord is that, besides being aesthetically refined, it’s also very practical: it’s easy to wash (by hand or in the washing machine with care), holds its shape, and retains its natural beauty over time.
Want to make one too?
If this baby basket touched your heart and made you want to create one for a special birth, I’ve prepared a gift for you: a free downloadable PDF with all the step-by-step instructions to crochet it, just like mine.
Inside you’ll find the complete list of materials, detailed explanations of the stitches used, tips for personalizing it, and of course, assembly advice using the Drake cotton edge and Dolly buttons.
It’s my way of accompanying you on this little creative journey, made of moving hands, intertwining threads, and thoughts full of love.

Basket, yes – but not just for a birth
Although it was created to welcome a new life, this basket has a thousand uses. Its simple yet refined design makes it perfect for other corners of the home too, especially in the bathroom, where elegance and practicality must go hand in hand.
You can use it, for example, to organize your daily skincare products: serums, creams, cotton pads… everything will have its place, neatly but stylishly. Or you can fill it with rolled-up guest towels, creating a cozy and tidy corner.
Imagine it on a light wood cabinet, next to a scented candle, a succulent plant, and maybe a few seashells collected by the shore: a little ritual of beauty and harmony, all enclosed in a basket made by your own hands.
A basket may seem like a simple object, but when it’s handmade with love and care, it becomes much more: a kind gesture, a lasting thought, a small piece of home. Whether to welcome a new life or to add beauty and order to your everyday, this project combines aesthetics and functionality, creativity and warmth.
I hope my baby basket inspired you to create your own, to personalize it, to imagine it in different settings. Because every thread that’s woven tells a story – and yours can start right here.
Happy crafting, always with your heart in your hands.
