The name Filo di Scozia (Scottish Thread) has ancient origins and refers to the fact that the mercerization process, which ultimately is a washing of the cotton in caustic soda that gives it its characteristic luster, was first done in Scotland, hence the name Filo di Scozia.

The Filo di Scozia is known for many garments for underwear: Filo di Scozia socks, Filo di Scozia underwear, Filo di Scozia t-shirts, Filo di Scozia for women, Filo di Scozia for men; but what interests us is the Filo di Scozia for crochet. Certainly, you may have bought Filo di Scozia socks and appreciated their characteristics: well, we are talking about the same fiber, although for the textile industry it naturally comes in different thicknesses.

The Crochet Filo di Scozia

The Filo di Scozia for crochet is a high-quality thread constructed with the best cotton fibers. Mostly cultivated along the coasts of the Nile River, the Egyptian cotton with which the majority of the Filo di Scozia threads are made, always 100% cotton, is called Makò cotton and is characterized by being picked from plants with a long staple. This feature is not of secondary importance because it allows obtaining a fiber resistant to wear and tear that does not easily get damaged. The luster, on the other hand, is given by the double mercerization process it undergoes. The thread presents itself as a shiny and smooth thread very similar to silk and comes in different sizes, which conventionally are cotton number 5, cotton number 8, cotton number 12, cotton number 16, and cotton number 25. There are also other numbers but here we will talk about the most requested on the Italian market.

How to choose the right Filo di Scozia cotton

As mentioned, the cotton comes in different numbers: the higher the number, the thinner the thread. Therefore, among those in the Tessiland catalog, number 5 will be the thickest while number 25 will be the thinnest.

The cotton no.5

The Filo di Scozia no.5 is undoubtedly the progenitor of the Tessiland Scottish Threads. The best-selling with a vast color chart always assorted and that gets enriched every season. Also present in the collection in the shaded version, the Filo di Scozia 5 is named AMANDA 5 and is recognized as the Filo di Scozia cotton with the best quality-price ratio in Italy. Suitable for both clothing and decorative items, we have even seen it as the protagonist of clutches and small bags. In short, the most versatile among the Filo di Scozia threads.

The cotton no.8

The Filo di Scozia no.8 fits in between the threads used for clothing and those specifically for decorative items. The Tessiland's Filo di Scozia number 8 is the Adele 8 which, like number 5, comes with a wide color palette that enriches every year according to demand. In addition to clothing, it is also used for home accessories such as runners, doilies, curtains, and even for jewelry with the help of beads and crystals.

The cotton no.12

Without a doubt, the most used Filo di Scozia for curtains, runners, and filet. When you are looking for a thin cotton with a very long length but not too thin to see your project grow quite quickly, then you will choose the Anastasia 12. The filet, which is a very ancient technique consisting of a series of chains and continues with regular sequences of double crochets and chains to form refined designs, is a technique increasingly practiced also by the younger generation in the trend of rediscovering old crafts.

The cotton no.16

The use of cotton no.16 is analogous to the works done with Filo di Scozia no.12 but even thinner. Refinement but still within the possibility of not reaching extremely thin lace-like works. The Araja 16 is used to create home decor items but also sofa and table runners. It is rarely used for clothing except for lace inserts like Sangallo lace.

The cotton no.25

It is the thinnest crochet cotton in the range for professional-grade work. Here we should open a chapter on the history of crochet works taught by the nuns at the oratory.
